Just when I started lamenting over the things I can no longer do -like stopping at my favorite coffee shop to enjoy a latte, visiting friends, working out at the gym, doing stairs with my friend Jeri, texting Rick as I finish teaching and asking him to meet me at our local Thai restaurant for dinner, or seeing a friend and giving and getting a hug- I came across a poem and some visual art which lifted my spirit!
The poem below is the work of a poet-monk. My friend and yoga student Terri Gaffney sent me this meaning poem written by Fr. Richard Hendrick, a Franciscan Monk.
The artwork you see in this post was created by the lovely visual artist, Barbara Wollner. You can read more about Barbara Wollner on her website. I know you will also be filled with hope upon seeing Barbara’s art, just as I am!
Lockdown
Yes there is fear.
Yes there is isolation.
Yes there is panic buying.
Yes there is sickness.
Yes there is even death.
But,
They say that in Wuhan after so many years of noise
You can hear the birds again.
They say that after just a few weeks of quiet
The sky is no longer thick with fumes
But blue and grey and clear.
They say that in the streets of Assisi
People are singing to each other
across the empty squares,
keeping their windows open
so that those who are alone
may hear the sounds of family around them.
They say that a hotel in the West of Ireland
Is offering free meals and delivery to the housebound.
Today a young woman I know
is busy spreading fliers with her number
through the neighbourhood
So that the elders may have someone to call on.
Today Churches, Synagogues, Mosques and Temples
are preparing to welcome
and shelter the homeless, the sick, the weary
All over the world people are slowing down and reflecting
All over the world people are looking at their neighbours in a new way
All over the world people are waking up to a new reality
To how big we really are.
To how little control we really have.
To what really matters.
To Love.
So we pray and we remember that
Yes there is fear.
But there does not have to be hate.
Yes there is isolation.
But there does not have to be loneliness.
Yes there is panic buying.
But there does not have to be meanness.
Yes there is sickness.
But there does not have to be disease of the soul
Yes there is even death.
But there can always be a rebirth of love.
Wake to the choices you make as to how to live now.
Today, breathe.
Listen, behind the factory noises of your panic
The birds are singing again
The sky is clearing,
Spring is coming,
And we are always encompassed by Love.
Open the windows of your soul
And though you may not be able
to touch across the empty square,
Sing.

Fran – This strange and scary time reminds me of Sarejevo, when in April 1992 the city was besieged and in 30 days life changed, dangerous to go out in the streets because of snipers, no water except from fire hydrants, electricity one hour a day if lucky, food in short supply and very expensive, the average person lost 25#. A new and very arduous reality. The only solace was solidarity and sharing a coffee with friends in your apartments. Until the coffee ran out. Even for someone like me who could get in and out on U.N. flights, it was mind twisting. And it was more than three years before the siege was lifted. Relatively speaking, we are very fortunate.
During the 1918 – 1919 Spanish flu epidemic, 3% of the world’s population died, medical care was much more primitive. No tests, no ventilators. But when the calendar turned to 2020, there was no more flu. Many people didn’t get it, most of those who did recovered ad developed immunity. This one will proceed and end the same way. But this time round we can minimize transmission and deaths by keeping our distance until tests and time show us the way out.
Perspective helps me a lot. I hope it does everyone.
Thank you for your always uplifting posts. You are a treasure.
Thank you for your thought provoking reply. If Korea had the power to nip this in the bud then why can’t we? It seems some people are not taking this isolation idea seriously. I look out the window and see people walking in big groups in the park. Perspective does help a lot. Self Isolate – Social Distancing is the answer. Namaste, Fran
Love you and miss you, Fran!! I had heard that about the birds in Wuhan, such a lovely and unexpected thing that must be amidst all the sadness. Thinking of you!
We are doing very well, thanks. We’re in Cabo San Lucas at our home on the side of a rocky mountain, looking over the turquoise blue Pacific Ocean and enjoying each other and the quite. It is VERY quite… kinda surreal… but overall kinda nice.
Hugs, Jeanne
Wonderful. And feeling connected to Barbara too! Thanks, Fran. Xoxo

Beautiful words and artwork that lift my spirit this morning. Thanks you Fran. We are doing well and trying to maintain calm awareness, that can edge over to anxious hyper vigilance when I’m not looking.
HI Kay! Thank you for your comment! Part One of Three blog posts. I hope you and Butch stay healthy. Love, Fran
Thank you Fran for sharing such warm and healthful wisdom. This is the perfect time to witness our moments with the fullest of intentions and focus, as we care for ourselves selfishly. Be well.
